About this event:
Based out of Charleston, SC, Well Charged formed over a shared love for vintage reggae, rocksteady, and ska music. With over 50 years combined experience performing Jamaican rhythms, their style is a faithful nod to the early pioneers of Caribbean music – Alton Ellis, Desmond Dekker, and Prince Buster, to name a few.
Well Charged’s core instrumentation includes bass, drums, keyboards, and guitar. Founding members John Picard (drums) and Vasily Punsalan (bass) began their journey as a duo, backing John Brown’s Body’s Kevin Kinsella over a decade ago. Their time spent traveling and performing, including a stint in Jamaica, created a wealth of experience, echoed in the nuance of their performance. Upon returning to the Lowcountry, Picard met David Hillis (keys) after noticing some patches sewn to his jacket. The group invited Andrew Link Krepelka (guitar, vocals), a longtime ska reggae musician, shortly thereafter, and lead singers Megg Howe and Mel Walker in 2018 and 2019 respectively.
